Some of the world’s longest nonstop flights involve the US, a handful of which are ultra-long-haul. While definitions vary, this is usually taken to mean flights that take more than 16 hours.
Inevitably, some services are operated by the niche Airbus A350-900ULR and the Boeing 777-200LR. They are, of course, designed for such missions, although both types are necessarily deeply unpopular. However, other equipment, including the A350-1000 and 787-9, both famed for their long ranges and economics, are also deployed.
The US’s 10 Longest Nonstop Flights In July
They are organized by maximum block time, which is chocks-off-to-chocks-on. It includes taxi time at both airports, flight time, and a period for short delays. The cutoff time of 17h 05m means the US’s longest 747 passenger flight did not feature.
Analyzing other months may result in different entries, particularly for those airport pairs lower down the list. This is especially the case in the winter, which usually involves stronger headwinds and, therefore, a higher block time.
Unsurprisingly, Singapore Airlines from New York JFK Airport (the US’s leading widebody airport) back to Singapore is number one. It is the world’s longest nonstop scheduled passenger flight. Famously, it uses the 161-seat A350-900ULR, with 67 seats in business class and 94 in premium economy. To help with appeal, comfort, fares, and yields, regular economy is unavailable on the very expensive-to-operate route.
Maximum Block Time In July* | Direction Of Route** | Nonstop Operations Only |
---|---|---|
19h 15m | New York JFK back to Singapore | Singapore Airlines (daily A350-900ULR) |
19h 10m | Newark back to Singapore | Singapore Airlines (daily A350-900ULR) |
18h 00m | New York JFK back to Auckland | Air New Zealand (three weekly 787-9) and Qantas*** (five weekly 787-9) |
17h 35m= | Dallas/Fort Worth back to Melbourne | Qantas (four weekly 787-9) |
17h 35m= | Los Angeles back to Singapore | Singapore Airlines (ten weekly, three-class A350-900) |
17h 35m= | Delhi to Newark | Air India (four weekly A350-900) |
17h 20m | Mumbai to San Francisco | Air India (four weekly 777-200LR) |
17h 15m= | Dallas/Fort Worth back to Sydney | Qantas (daily 787-9, but the A380 reappears in August) |
17h 15m= | Delhi to New York JFK | Air India (six weekly to daily A350-900) |
17h 05m | Doha to Los Angeles | Qatar Airways (daily A350-1000) |
* Regardless of the operator, if there’s more than one. The maximum figure applies even if just one flight has it | ** With the highest block time | *** Flights continue back to Sydney, with fifth freedom traffic rights between Auckland and JFK |
A Special Word On Air India’s Entries
Three of the Star Alliance member’s routes were featured: Delhi to Newark, Mumbai to San Francisco, and Delhi to New York JFK. The inclusion of the two East Coast US airports is because Air India must avoid Pakistani airspace, which increases the maximum block times and operating expenses significantly, while reducing the carrier’s competitiveness. Currently, Newark service is timed at up to 17h 35m, and JFK is up to 17h 15m. However, Cirium Diio data shows the block times were no more than 14h 45m last July.
Flightradar24 indicates that the Newark and JFK routes operate nonstop in both directions. The exception is San Francisco. While flights from Mumbai are nonstop to California (with a block time of up to 17h 20m), they stop in Kolkata to refuel en route back to India. As such, that direction was not included in the analysis, which focused exclusively on nonstop operations.
Doha To Los Angeles Is The US’s Longest A350-1000 Flight
The Qatari flag carrier has flown to the US since 2007. Los Angeles joined its map in 2016 aboard the Boeing 777-200LR, with Doha being the world’s third-busiest airport for 200LR flights. The higher-capacity 777-300ER appeared at times, while the A350-1000’s debut was in June 2020.
The A350-1000 continues to be the only equipment Qatar Airways uses to the Southern California airport. Only the higher-premium 327-seat configuration is deployed, with 46 Q Suites and 281 economy seats. In the year to March 2025, the one world airline filled 92% of Los Angeles seats, with Yerevan, Tehran, and Mumbai being its most popular connecting markets.
